“Health is not simply the absence of illness. Real health is the will to overcome every form of adversity and use even the worst of circumstances as a springboard for new growth and development. Simply put, the essence of health is the constant renewal and rejuvenation of life.”
~Daisaku Ikeda (from My Grandmother’s Hands by Resmaa Menakem)
I can tell you what that means to me but what does it mean to you?
Renewal and rejuvenation are action forward nouns. That means a healthy mind, body and soul take effort and requires thoughtful attention and intention. Then, activation to choose to begin (again? Go for it!) and invest in yourself. All that’s important. It’s paying attention in a particular way to your system’s needs in the moment without judgment. Some people spend their entire lives waiting for the time to be right to make an improvement (James Clear).
What’s needed right now? In this instance?
Rest? Like quiet meditation or a power nap in your recliner? Reading a good book? Getting to bed and rising earlier?
Movement? What kind? A leisurely walk with a friend to catch up or a brisk walk alone listening to a podcast? Gentle stretching or yoga? Your favorite gym class?
Maybe you need to eat. What’s needed? Listen in. Your body has so much to tell you! What would nourish it in just the right way, an enjoyable choice that is pleasurable, that satisfies your appetite and fills your belly and yields the qualities you’d like to feel.
How’s your heart? Is it crusted over or flowing freely? Open or closed? Tender or tough? What would help it feel optimal?
Time here with these inquires is well spent. Your choices will be meaningful and purposeful and therefore, just the right ones!
