As an amateur body builder back then, something hurt every day. Muscles would engorge with nourishing blood and in a day or two, ow! Just picking up a coffee cup would innervate my biceps with that dull, sore pain. Sitting and getting up from my desk was an agonizing experience for muscle-ripped quads.
A few mid-springs ago, an enchanted hike to Mt. Lafayette via the Skookumchuck trail in New Hampshire left me nearly paralyzed with pain for days on end. It was so bad, I checked in with my hike-mates – they were in the same boat. Seems the muddiness of the trail encouraged us to clamp our muscles to the bones to steady ourselves – even so, we all ended up in puddles up to our calves or in a mud slide.
Wish I had known about Epsom salts. Seems at the University of Birmingham, England, researchers realized that we can absorb the magnesium sulfate in Epsom salts through our skin and the mineral absorption speeds muscle recovery better than resting them. Rx is dissolving 1-2 cups of Epsom salts in a warm bath, then hop in and soak for 10-20 minutes.
Light a candle or two, close your eyes, and enjoy the tranquility of rest, warmth, and healing. Now, personally, I’d add a cup of hot tea (or sinfully, a stemless glass of pinot noir!).
