Another awesome study Dr. Brian Wansink of Cornell University did was to recognize Secretary’s Day. He observed secretaries who were awarded for being great that year and to reward this milestone, they were given all the candy they could eat for a month.
Candies were placed either on their desks or six feet away. Either in a clear or opaque bowl. The candy dishes were refilled daily.
What do you think is the outcome of this study?
You’re right! Secretaries at 9 Hershey’s Kisses a day (225 calories or so) if the bowl was on her desk. This equates to an 11-12 lb weight gain in a year. But only 4 kisses were smacked on if they were 6 feet away.
The secretaries swore that 6 feet wasn’t too far to walk but it gave them pause to question their hunger. Nice!!
Seeing is believing – those gals with a clear bowl ate 2 more candies per day than those with an opaque bowl.
Moral of the Story: Hide the candy and junk food. Store it in a non-see-through container (brown paper bag, opaque Tupperware) in a cupboard. Ask a co-worker to put it out of sight and forget to tell you where it is. When it’s out of sight, it’s out of mind.
