Receiving the Teachings

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Waves of homesickness crashed over me the first night in the high cliffs of Jamaica. Surrounded by women gathered to hone their skills of yoga for recovery of disordered eating, I felt out of place. I missed and yearned for the spiritual connection of my Anusara kula.

It was late and lots of cranky pants personalities blended into the warm breeze dusting our skin. An unsettled feeling permeated the air as we had all just made our way through a bustling airport, hour and a half ride along a motion-sickness-inducing road and hungry, we found our way to delicious Jamaican fare before our orientation.

In meditation, we were asked to intend a question. At that moment, all I could think of was how in the world was I going to appreciate and receive the teachings this week? So, I made that my question…….we took our question into meditation. My answers were stiff and structured after the first of 4 meditations: (more…)

Gratitude and Abundance

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

I’m borrowing the deeply felt and poetic expressions of my friend, Joyce, owner of Earth Heart Yoga Studio (www.earthheartyoga.com) to share thoughts of gratitude and abundance. Joyce Kendall thumbnail

This week of Thanksgiving and gratitude is a time we come together to join in lunges, laughter and light.

Yoga is a welcome reprieve from the day-to-day demands, responsibilities and limitations. It’s a time of a few gentle and not-so-gentle glimpses into the place beyond what we believe to be our limit.

Yoga is the palpable presence of the flow of grace in each and every moment.

A nice deep breath.

The millisecond of balance that makes us smile inside and out.

The undeniable inner warmth that we feel when we are a part of something life enhancing. (more…)

Sticky – On, not off the mat

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Sticky isn’t comfortable in my elbow creases on a hot, muggy summer day -- ick! What I do want sticky is my yoga mat. Check out this video on the new prAna Revolution Mat created in collaboration with prAna and Anusara yoga founder, John Friend.

Open to Grace

Yoga - Take a Seat

Open to Grace or, you could say, Step Into the Flow or Flow From the Heart – in any event, the first principle of Anusara yoga just feels good.  Often, we come to the mat stressed, tired, frustrated or just preoccupied with thoughts of the day.  Taking a seat at the beginning of our practice, and settling down by turning in to the movement of our breath releases our tension, anxiety and negativity; it even begins to still our thoughts.  The exhalation part of our breath connects to the parasympathetic nervous system which has calming effects - for instance, if you breath very rapidly, as we tend to do when we become anxious or worried, you become more agitated because of the increase of oxygen in your bloodstream. This creates an imbalance in the acid/alkaline level in our blood.  Conversely, slowing down the breath, especially the exhalation, allows the carbon dioxide in our blood stream to counter the oxygen levels, and we achieve homeostatis or balance.

Right away, watching our breath, we begin to slow down………….then, we step into the stream of Grace.  Simply put, we take a moment to remember that inside is a luminosity, a sweetness, a quiet haven.  In this space, we can be more gracious and open-minded toward ourselves.  This principle gives us permission to see the innate goodness in ourselves that often is forgotten in the rushing of life.  Personally, without aligning with Grace in my yoga practice, I feel like I’m exercising.  Yes, I feel physically great afterwards, but the Light inside remains dim – my judgments and negative self-talk have a tendency to return more easily.

I love how John Friend, founder of Anusara yoga, describes the intention of practicing Anusara yoga.  It is “to align with the flow of Grace, to awaken to the truth that our essential nature is part of the divine flow….  In each pose, we artistically offer our individual light and our unique music to the flow of life.”  It means I can relax, enjoy, and move through my practice with greater ease and self-confidence.

Flowing with Grace means I say yes to all of life – the light and the dark – so that I can embrace everything that arises in my life with less anxiety and stress, struggle and strife.  I more  easily embrace the fact that everything that happens to me is for my own good.  You’ve heard “like water flows off a duck’s back.”  You can achieve this equanimity through yoga.  Yoga makes life fun and exciting, inspiring and enthusiastic.  Come join – take a deep breath, exhale slowly, and Open to Grace!  Your life will be instantly different.

San Francisco and Yoga – Releasing Expectations

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

San Fran SleepingLast night, the light of day was still intense as this body on Boston time was crawling into the vast whiteness and fluff of bed, so the night shades of this downtown hotel were drawn tight to emulate darkness.

I awoke to the same bright light of day. Looking down from the 30th floor, I saw bricks and mortar, asphalt and residential hills lazily unroll themselves down into the Bay where the big transport ships lay groggy from the night.

Krisha Das croons the Anusara invocation from my iPod.  His voice cloaks the memory of the chant earlier at YogaKula on 16th Street where I saw familiar faces and felt the consistent kindness and gentle spirit of Anusarans.  The resonance and tone as our voices blending harmoniously enveloped me with their purity, and instantly, I softened.

The Bart had swiftly carried me to the door step of the studio and as students arrived, they welcomed me and let me in on their secret:  Jayne Hillman is an incredible teacher but traffic sometimes makes her late.  They assured me she was worth the wait.  ”First thing in the morning, it’s not a good idea to get pissed at your yoga teacher,” said Amy Dowling, a familiar face from MA. Liv said, “Release expectations.  That’s the yoga way.”

Jayne, a certified Anusara teacher, flew in, breathless and apologetic, and with a receptive heart, folded each one of us into her fold.  Throughout the class, she deftly honed in on my trouble spot – that dad-blasted psoas that keeps me bound – and cued me to bow more deeply to achieve kidney loop and ‘use those abs’ to keep it.  Whew, that 2-hour class was intense and delicious, ripe and full. After nearly 7 hours in flight yesterday, my body craved the intensity and release. I left most grateful to Jayne, who molded and prodded me into fullness of back body with camel and wheel, and who didn’t know I secretly had been yearning for backbends.

There’s nothing more fulfilling than treating your body to a fresh California meal after a practice like that.  Yummy morning radishes, cranberries and mixed greens gently tossed with olive oil and vinegar alongside a rich brothy lentil soup capped off an amazing experience.

Can’t wait to do it all again tomorrow morning!
