Splenda Making You Hungry?

Woman eating

Hungrier because of diet soda? How about multi-packs of artificial sweetener in your Dunkin Donuts?

A study published in the last couple of years showed that drinking soda, diet and regular, increased abdominal fat – that yukky fat that congregates around our intestines and stomach, deep inside. A larger than normal waistline, combined with other factors like low HDL (good cholesterol), high LDL (bad cholesterol), high triglycerides, pre-hypertension (blood pressure that is bordering on high), and high blood sugar are risk factors of metabolic syndrome. Having 3 of the 5 puts you at risk for heart disease and diabetes.

Research is crazy wicked not-so-straightforward. One review in 2009 resulted in stating artificial sweeteners may increase appetite. The same review reported if the artificial sweetener is eaten in combination with or in foods with calories does not stimulate appetite. And, appetizers using sugar subs didn’t increase appetite at the meal.

Bottom line (until we can figure it all out) (more…)

Blast Belly Fat!

mid section view of a woman holding her belly

Menopause belly is challenging. A few years ago, peri-menopause introduced me to that softening around the mid-section, then the accumulation of an added half inch to an inch of lovely adipose tissue (fat). And sometimes, we get this padding from a little too much wine with dinner, or an extra dessert here and there. And sometimes, it just is. No matter how many crunches we do, our tight little six-pack remains hidden away under a couple of rolls.

Here are 3 secrets to using food to whittle away those waist-ful deposits: (more…)

When dieting, KISS

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Old Way: Weigh and measure for exact proportions of carbs, protein and fat or your body won’t work. Calculate and count to the last calorie or you won’t lose weight – don’t go one over or under. Space out meals, preferably 5-6 small meals a day, to ensure metabolism burns high and blood sugar is level for smooth sailing through your day. Disregard your hunger – eat only at prescribed and scheduled times. Don’t eat beets or carrots or sweet potatoes or avocados. Minimize fat to the least amount you can tolerate. Sugar subs only, never sugar.

In Appetite, published online 9.12.09, researchers say complex diets with rules and calculations are set-ups for failure in weight management. Pick an uncomplicated plan so you know you can stick to it not only in the short term, but forever. Keep it simple, silly. Try this…. (more…)

Is Your Boyfriend Making You Fat?

Close-up of young couple sharing drink in fast food restaurant

Sometimes falling in love can make you as soft and goey on the outside as it does on the inside! These pages usually contain my own thoughts and words instead of simply linking to another page. But in truth, this story is as fun a read as the title. Click the link below and enjoy!

Footloose with Juice – Can You Afford That?

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Juice Mon? Yea Mon! Juice, the preferred beverage at every meal in Jamaica, is overt in this colorful display at a local market – juice spills onto the floor in gallon-sized jubs. Cherry, quava, pineapple, orange – you name it, they have it.

Fidgeting, I began to turn down their kind offer of liquid refreshment – to me, it was added unpurposeful calories. Evidence shows that sugar-sweetened beverages, like soda, show up at our waistline (as in metabolic syndrome) more readily. Even diet soda contributes to MetS. Juice will too. MetS is being told “you don’t have diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease YET.”

To be diagnosed with MetS, you must present with 3 of 5 symptoms: (more…)
