Unfriendly New Deals in Fast Food

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Yours for only 1500+ calories and 97 grams of fat! All for just $5 at Friendly’s. What a bargain, right?

It’s amazing that this almost doesn’t look unusual – we’ve become complacent in how we view food.  Bigger is better, fat is fabulous, filling is fantastic, fuller is even more …..barf, well, not so good but what’s full anymore?  With portions like this, how do we even know when to stop eating?

Denny’s offers a free Grand Slam breakfast once a year (see pic of how busy they are!). And now, they’re pleasuring us with all the fixin’s of a Grand Slam into a sandwich of potato bread grilled with a maple spice spread.  Yum!  Look for this deal called the Grand Slamwich.  It’s a steal at 1320 calories, 90 g fat and 42 g saturated fat – enough to clog your arteries for 3 days (provided you’re following a 7% saturated fat intake daily, based on 2000 calories).

I wonder about corporate social responsibility.  I wonder if the big food companies know anything about ethics and responsibility to provide healthy food options at a price many can afford.  I wonder what it would look like in the U.S. for these companies to embrace responsibility for the outcome of their offerings, for the impact their offerings have had on consumer’s health and well-being.  Hmmmmmm……….thoughts?

Blast Belly Fat!

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010
mid section view of a woman holding her belly

Menopause belly is challenging. A few years ago, peri-menopause introduced me to that softening around the mid-section, then the accumulation of an added half inch to an inch of lovely adipose tissue (fat). And sometimes, we get this padding from a little too much wine with dinner, or an extra dessert here and there. And sometimes, it just is. No matter how many crunches we do, our tight little six-pack remains hidden away under a couple of rolls.

Here are 3 secrets to using food to whittle away those waist-ful deposits: (more…)

Healthy, Wise and Younger Looking!

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Our skin is the first thing most people notice about us – and good skin starts from the inside out. While it’s advertised that expensive creams and lotions, scrubs and exfoliations are the way to go, using harsh cleaners and soaps with hot water actually removes the natural oils that give us a healthy glow. We end up with dry, scaly, lackluster skin.

What goes inside your body has tremendous impact on your outer body – First, keep cigarette smoke out of your lungs. Whether you smoke or breathe in second-hand smoke, damage occurs to the collagen and elastin fibers that strengthen skin and give it elasticity.

Next, chose foods wisely for skin health and you’ll be vibrant through and through:

Stay hydrated with pure water – your skin can be a stronger barrier against external toxins

Eat healthy fats like omega-3’s (salmon, tuna and flaxseeds), avocados, walnuts and almonds, and vegetable oils (olive and canola) for stronger and more plump cell membranes. Try an avocado mask!

Add Vitamin A-rich foods like carrots, butternut squash, sweet potatoes which let skin repair itself

Plan on foods with B vitamins (yummy whole grains) to reduce inflammation

With these easy tips, you can put your best face forward!

Sometimes falling in love can make you as soft and goey on the outside as it does on the inside! These pages usually contain my own thoughts and words instead of simply linking to another page. But in truth, this story is as fun a read as the title. Click the link below and enjoy!

Power up With Avocado

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

If you’re looking for a more versatile food, stop! You’ve found it in the delicious and creamy avocado.

Many shy away from avocados. “Don’t they make you fat?” is the outcry. Yes, avocados offer about a third of their calories from fat but the benefits far outweigh the risks. This luscious green fruit from Mexico is like a chameleon – dressing in disguises from ice cream to sandwich filler to salmon topper to power smoothies to salad dressing, the avocado boasts of antioxidants and good fat which increases your absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, like vitamin A (they also contain lutein, a great antioxidant for healthy eyes). Avocadoes contain a plant sterol that lowers cholesterol and has a creamy mouthfeel and satiation factor that keeps you from overeating.

Here are some ways to enjoy the deliciousness of avocadoes: (more…)
