Hometown Health

Thursday, July 1st, 2010
Capitol building in Washington DC USA

Ever wonder what it would be like to live someplace else? A daydream about inner-city mania where you could walk to local shops and restaurants. Or suburban life with large parking lots outside malls rich with color, electronics, food courts and Gap? Or a rural farm land abode with a few chickens, maybe a cow or two?

Before you rent a U-Haul and bubble-wrap your entire life’s belongings, check out the health of your own hometown at http://countyhealthrankings.org, then compare it to the city of your dreams. You might find there’s no place like home!

Healthy, Wise and Younger Looking!

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Our skin is the first thing most people notice about us – and good skin starts from the inside out. While it’s advertised that expensive creams and lotions, scrubs and exfoliations are the way to go, using harsh cleaners and soaps with hot water actually removes the natural oils that give us a healthy glow. We end up with dry, scaly, lackluster skin.

What goes inside your body has tremendous impact on your outer body – First, keep cigarette smoke out of your lungs. Whether you smoke or breathe in second-hand smoke, damage occurs to the collagen and elastin fibers that strengthen skin and give it elasticity.

Next, chose foods wisely for skin health and you’ll be vibrant through and through:

Stay hydrated with pure water – your skin can be a stronger barrier against external toxins

Eat healthy fats like omega-3’s (salmon, tuna and flaxseeds), avocados, walnuts and almonds, and vegetable oils (olive and canola) for stronger and more plump cell membranes. Try an avocado mask!

Add Vitamin A-rich foods like carrots, butternut squash, sweet potatoes which let skin repair itself

Plan on foods with B vitamins (yummy whole grains) to reduce inflammation

With these easy tips, you can put your best face forward!

Calling all Clutter Bugs!

Friday, June 4th, 2010

My Feng Shui friend, Natalia Kaylin, says “The practice of clearing clutter is the practice of letting things go. Clutter takes the form not only of material things, but also mental and emotional states.” A curious point she brings to light is that many times, we have an emotional attachment to these things, even if their is no need for them or they are broken. “Most clutter,” she continues, “creates guilt. It drains us, lowers our energy.”

No Problem – We’re in Jamaica Mon!

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

One Love…..I still hear Bob Marley crooning the island’s theme song and every where I look, I see joy pulsating in Jamaican faces, the vast ocean and palm trees, and especially on the long, narrow, winding road from Montego Bay to Negril Beach. At a reggae concert, the energy of love rippled through the crowds as the ocean crashed into the cliffs just below us, spraying happy bodies with salty water. And, it was raining! Still, smiles and love everywhere.

What would it take to have that attitude in Boston? Or Detroit? Or San Francisco? Or Houston? Or upstate New York? Or Indianapolis? (more…)

Temptations of the Ego

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

This blog is courtesy of my friend, Daniel Max, Nutrition and Health Counselor, Life and Wellness Coach, Massage Therapist specializing in Shiatsu, and a Yoga Instructor. www.MaxSenseOfSelf.com

As the end of January approaches, it becomes more difficult for many of us to keep our New Year’s resolutions. Fearing change we may begin to make excuses to keep us repeating old patterns.

We all have egos that endeavor to maintain a sense of control and do everything possible to prevent us from breaking out of our comfort zones.

Although we understand that it is time to take action and make changes, we often experience a strong resistance. Our ego whispers, “don’t bother. It’s too much work. Things are fine the way they are.”

As we begin applying ourselves towards creating change (getting fit, losing weight, quitting an unhealthy habit, prioritizing family and friends, becoming organized, etc.), the trapped energy within our bodies and minds begins to stir. Things swept under the rug rise to the surface, making change to be a somewhat difficult experience. This is when the voice of discouragement and doubt can grow louder.

The ego’s most common strategy is resistance; saying we are too tired or too busy to deal with such things, that we can do more constructive or enjoyable tasks. Ego manifests as reasoning to celebrate our weight loss with a cookie, or as an injury that occurs just as our new workout has become routine.

Resistance is like breathing, even if we don’t think about it, it just happens. The ego is not evil; It is just trying its best to keep us safe. Making changes in our lives and taking steps towards self-improvement can be overwhelming. The ego, rooted in fear, much like an overly protective parent, prefers us not to take any chances that might cause us to feel hurt. (more…)
