Unfriendly New Deals in Fast Food

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Yours for only 1500+ calories and 97 grams of fat! All for just $5 at Friendly’s. What a bargain, right?

It’s amazing that this almost doesn’t look unusual – we’ve become complacent in how we view food.  Bigger is better, fat is fabulous, filling is fantastic, fuller is even more …..barf, well, not so good but what’s full anymore?  With portions like this, how do we even know when to stop eating?

Denny’s offers a free Grand Slam breakfast once a year (see pic of how busy they are!). And now, they’re pleasuring us with all the fixin’s of a Grand Slam into a sandwich of potato bread grilled with a maple spice spread.  Yum!  Look for this deal called the Grand Slamwich.  It’s a steal at 1320 calories, 90 g fat and 42 g saturated fat – enough to clog your arteries for 3 days (provided you’re following a 7% saturated fat intake daily, based on 2000 calories).

I wonder about corporate social responsibility.  I wonder if the big food companies know anything about ethics and responsibility to provide healthy food options at a price many can afford.  I wonder what it would look like in the U.S. for these companies to embrace responsibility for the outcome of their offerings, for the impact their offerings have had on consumer’s health and well-being.  Hmmmmmm……….thoughts?

Splenda Making You Hungry?

Thursday, June 24th, 2010
Woman eating

Hungrier because of diet soda? How about multi-packs of artificial sweetener in your Dunkin Donuts?

A study published in the last couple of years showed that drinking soda, diet and regular, increased abdominal fat – that yukky fat that congregates around our intestines and stomach, deep inside. A larger than normal waistline, combined with other factors like low HDL (good cholesterol), high LDL (bad cholesterol), high triglycerides, pre-hypertension (blood pressure that is bordering on high), and high blood sugar are risk factors of metabolic syndrome. Having 3 of the 5 puts you at risk for heart disease and diabetes.

Research is crazy wicked not-so-straightforward. One review in 2009 resulted in stating artificial sweeteners may increase appetite. The same review reported if the artificial sweetener is eaten in combination with or in foods with calories does not stimulate appetite. And, appetizers using sugar subs didn’t increase appetite at the meal.

Bottom line (until we can figure it all out) (more…)

Footloose with Juice – Can You Afford That?

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Juice Mon? Yea Mon! Juice, the preferred beverage at every meal in Jamaica, is overt in this colorful display at a local market – juice spills onto the floor in gallon-sized jubs. Cherry, quava, pineapple, orange – you name it, they have it.

Fidgeting, I began to turn down their kind offer of liquid refreshment – to me, it was added unpurposeful calories. Evidence shows that sugar-sweetened beverages, like soda, show up at our waistline (as in metabolic syndrome) more readily. Even diet soda contributes to MetS. Juice will too. MetS is being told “you don’t have diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease YET.”

To be diagnosed with MetS, you must present with 3 of 5 symptoms: (more…)

GERD is the word

Monday, January 4th, 2010

That awful burning sensation in your chest could be acid reflux, called GERD in the medical world. Gastroesophageal reflux disease to be exact. What happens is the spincter in your stomach called the cardiac spincter, right at the end of the esophagus, relaxes and allows some of the stomach acid to flow back up into the esophagus, damaging the lining there. Goodness, why would your spincter relax? It’s not at a spa! (more…)
