Quash the Effort of Winter Squash

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

Butternut squashHave you ever peeled or chopped a winter squash? You need super human hands because of their toughness. We often just toss the idea of winter squash aside because of this.

The flesh of winter squash, like butternut, acorn, and spaghetti is creamy in texture and versatile in use. Hence, they make a perfect accompaniment or main dish for chilly winter eves (and, a good source of vitamins A, E, and C. In Today’s Dietitian (Nov 09), Chef Kyle Shadix, MS RD (www.chefkyle.com), in order to prevent a kitchen wound, tells how he now bakes the whole squash instead of trying to peel and cut it into chunks for cooking. Gratitude and Abundance

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

I’m borrowing the deeply felt and poetic expressions of my friend, Joyce, owner of Earth Heart Yoga Studio (www.earthheartyoga.com) to share thoughts of gratitude and abundance. Joyce Kendall thumbnail

This week of Thanksgiving and gratitude is a time we come together to join in lunges, laughter and light.

Yoga is a welcome reprieve from the day-to-day demands, responsibilities and limitations. It’s a time of a few gentle and not-so-gentle glimpses into the place beyond what we believe to be our limit.

Yoga is the palpable presence of the flow of grace in each and every moment.

A nice deep breath.

The millisecond of balance that makes us smile inside and out.

The undeniable inner warmth that we feel when we are a part of something life enhancing. (more…)

Spiced Milk – a warm way to greet the frost

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Couple with hot drinks in winter

It finally arrived – frost! Just the other day, the stairs leaving the house when I went to teach yoga were crystaled and slippery.

Ayurveda tells us that we get a bit wind-blown in fall and as winter approaches, we get even more so – we feel colder, circulation slows, and digestion gets windy, well, that’s a nice way to say it. Sometimes we get bogged down with fluids and excess weight with the cold, damp heaviness of the winter chill.

Take the brrrrrrr out of winter with spiced milk. Tumeric, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom are warming spices and added to organic milk, can help with GI issues and insomnia as well as warm you from nose to toes. Enjoy this delicious, grounding beverage. (more…)

Chocolate Milk in School? Yes or No…..

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

I invite you to read Marion Nestle’s blog about the huge chocolate milk war going on between nutritionists fighting to remove it from schools and the dairy industry campaign digging in to keep it. Then, tell me what you think.

Someone Told Me Pasta is Bad

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

Spaghetti I couldn’t believe it. “Why,” I asked, “is pasta bad?”

It seems erroneous information has spread from the camp of high-fat, high-protein aficionados who said pasta was bad. Something about stimulating insulin production that causes release of ghrelin that tells us we’re hungry. So we eat. More and more and more. And store fat and more fat and more fat. (more…)
